IEW Writing & Grammar 1
Melissa Garcia (bio)
This theme-based course will cover the first half of IEW’s “Implementing the Structure and Style Writing Method” as we explore the Wonders of Science. Each unit will focus on a specific subject and writing structure, while emphasizing a particular style and enriching our writing with vocabulary from each lesson. Students will learn to take notes, create outlines, write from their notes, retell narratives and stories, summarize references, and write from pictures. “Slow and steady wins the race.” Dividing this textbook into two academic years will provide students with ample time to learn and practice each unit thoroughly. We want our students to master each lesson and feel a sense of accomplishment, which will help them become more confident writers. In addition, we will use Fix-It! Grammar 1, where students will “hunt for and correct errors while learning thorough explanations of punctuation rules, essential and nonessential clauses, complex sentence patterns, transitional phrases, and more.” Whether you are a novice or an experienced IEW student, this course will support students in learning, expanding, and growing in their writing. As a homeschooling mom, I have witnessed the benefits of revisiting workbooks and texts. Observing my children’s growth and confidence during the “second time around” has been both rewarding and promising. NOTE: IEW Part I – Wonders of Science Writing Lessons 1-15 & Fix-It! Science & Geography 1 & 2
Marilynn Bonner (bio)
NOTE: Science & Geography 1 (offered every other year) is NOT a prerequisite for Science & Geography 2 - students may enroll in Science & Geography 2 at any time. This course is designed to build both scientific knowledge and genuine curiosity, this course moves through the following over the course of the year — covering everything from the layers of the world we live on, to the atmosphere above our head and beyond. Students begin by exploring Earth's structure and the forces that shape it, including plate tectonics, the rock cycle, and the geology of the ocean floor. They then dive into physical oceanography, studying waves, tides, currents, and the diverse ecosystems of the marine world. From there, the course turns skyward to examine the atmosphere, weather systems, and the science of meteorology — including severe weather and the basics of forecasting, with hands-on lab work building their own weather instruments. The middle of the year takes a historical turn through paleontology and archaeology, where students explore fossil formation, the geologic time scale, ancient ecosystems, and the tools scientists use to uncover the distant past — including a mock dig site experience. The astronomy unit then expands the view dramatically, taking students through the solar system, the life cycles of stars and galaxies, and the history of human space exploration. The final weeks of the course bring the focus back to life itself, human body systems, and before closing with an exploration of ecosystems, biomes, and humanity's responsibility as stewards of the natural world.
