Spanish 1 introduces students to beginning Spanish. Students will learn and practice Spanish pronunciation. The class includes vocabulary and phrases to ask and answer questions in Spanish, give and follow directions, purchase items, make small talk, and present the gospel. Students will learn Bible verses and a couple of hymns in Spanish. They will learn Spanish grammar for nouns, pronouns, adjectives, present tense verbs, and preterite verbs.

In Spanish II, students study vocabulary and phrases to communicate at an intermediate level in a variety of settings: a store, a bank, an airport, a hotel, a doctor’s office, an auto shop, and on the mission field. The class particularly focuses on grammar, with practice in pronunciation, writing, listening, verb tenses, and moods. Students will learn Bible verses and write compositions to enable them to share the Gospel.

In Spanish III, students will continue to learn to communicate at an intermediate level with an emphasis on reading, writing, listening and speaking in Spanish. Grammar concepts are reviewed throughout the course.

American Sign Language (ASL) 1 - Tutor: Terry Moore (click for bio)

This is a beginner-level American Sign Language (ASL-1) course, designed as a foreign language credit or elective for high schoolers. All curriculum used in class is approved by the Deaf Community and is being used in various High Schools and Colleges to teach ASL.

This course provides students with a foundation to begin communicating with the Deaf community. Students will be learning ASL vocabulary and structure by practicing new signs every week with classroom exercises and will be creating sentences and sign different ASL dialogues while also learning about the Deaf culture and history. This course also introduces the students to the fundamentals of fingerspelling and numbers, and students will be supported in learning with videos and different games to help make learning fun, as well as signing to one another as they are learning to practice and use what they learn on a practical level.

Homework will be assigned every week, and occasionally we will have quizzes on what they have learned to support their studies further, including midterms and final exams. A grade will be provided at the end of the semester, as well as at the end of the year, along with a Certificate of Completion. All materials are included for the class in the form of YouTube links sent out weekly through Google Classroom.

Our goal for all students is to give them the right and accurate information so that they can feel confident when signing. What truly supports the students in learning this language is being educated by a Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing person who uses this language every day to communicate.

Learning ASL can be fun and opens so many doors to new people and experiences. It is a visual
(eyes/hands/face/body) language used by the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. That is why it is so important to learn from a Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or Child of a Deaf Adult Individual- they grew up learning and using this language most or all of their lives.

- Computer & access to the Internet for Google Classes, to view videos with signs they are learning in class.

ASL Level 2 class is designed for returning Level 1 students or those who have taken ASL in the past
with Ms. Moore.

Students will continue to learn with the vocabulary they have previously learned from ASL Level One and will be covering the next two vocabulary units available to build on their current knowledge base. New knowledge includes, but will not be limited to, discussing living situations, giving basic directions and commands involving a location, expressing needs, asking what a sign is, expressing travel times, contrastive structure, forming negative responses, talking about family and age ranking as well as comments on members, telling age, and additional number vocabulary.
